Planning a concrete patio: sizes, finishes, and what drives cost

Everyone wants a number before they want a conversation. Fair enough. But concrete patio cost depends on more variables than most quotes let on. The honest answer is "it depends" more often than a flat rate per square foot. We pour patios all over Bernalillo, Rio Rancho, and Corrales, and the range between a bare-bones slab and a stamped, colored patio with a seat wall is too wide for a single number to mean much.

Start with size, not price

Before cost, figure out size. A small patio off a back door, big enough for a table and four chairs, runs around 120 to 200 square feet. A patio meant to hold a grill, a dining set, and some lounge seating usually lands between 300 and 500 square feet. We've poured a few in the 600 to 800 range for people who wanted the whole backyard usable without stepping on dirt or gravel.

Bigger isn't always better here. A wide-open slab in full sun gets brutal by June. Without shade planned in from the start, a ramada, a tree, a shade sail, you end up with square footage nobody uses from noon to six. We'd rather build a smaller patio with real shade than a big one people avoid all summer.

Thickness, reinforcement, and the base underneath

A standard patio slab is 4 inches thick. That covers foot traffic, furniture, and the occasional stock tank pool people drag out in July. A patio that will see a vehicle or a hot tub needs a footing, because 4 inches isn't built for that kind of point load.

Reinforcement is either welded wire mesh or rebar on a grid. Mesh is standard for a residential patio and holds cracks tight if the slab shifts. Rebar costs more and makes sense on larger pours or poor soil. Neither stops cracking outright. Concrete cracks. Reinforcement just keeps cracks from opening into a trip hazard.

The base matters as much as the concrete itself, maybe more. Caliche soil doesn't drain and shifts with moisture the way clay does. We excavate past the topsoil, compact a gravel base, and grade it to move water away from the house before any concrete goes down. Skip that step and the patio settles unevenly within a couple of years. We've fixed more cracked patios caused by bad base prep than by bad weather.

Freeze-thaw and monsoon season

Our winters aren't brutal, but freeze-thaw nights in December and January still matter. Water under a slab that freezes will heave it. A sloped, compacted base with joints cut at the right spacing handles that. Trouble shows up on patios poured without joints, or too close to a downspout.

Monsoon season, July through September, is the other stress test. An afternoon storm can drop an inch of rain in twenty minutes, and a patio that doesn't slope away from the house will pond water against the foundation. That's why we check drainage on every estimate.

Finish options and what they add

Finish is where cost swings the most, more than size in a lot of cases.

  • Broom finish: the standard, functional surface. Cheapest option, good traction, holds up to sun without much fuss.
  • Stamped concrete: textured to look like flagstone, brick, or slate. Adds labor and material cost for the stamps and sealing, but changes the whole feel of a patio without the cost of real stone.
  • Exposed aggregate: the rock in the mix gets exposed by washing off the top layer of paste before it fully sets. Good traction, a different look, moderate added cost.
  • Colored or integrally tinted concrete: pigment mixed into the batch, or a stain applied after curing. Integral color is more even and pricier. A topical stain is cheaper and wears differently over time.

None of these is the right choice across the board. A broom finish patio with a good edge and the right slope will outlast a poorly prepped stamped patio by a decade. Spend the money on base prep first. Spend it on finish second.

What actually drives the number on your quote

Access matters more than people expect. A fenced backyard with no gate wide enough for a mixer truck means we're wheelbarrowing concrete in by hand, and that adds time and cost. A side yard full of Siberian elm seedlings and old gravel adds a demo step before we even get to forming. Removing an old slab or a gravel bed that's been there since the house was built is its own line item, because it's its own job.

Cure time affects scheduling more than cost: a slab needs about a week before it handles light furniture, closer to a month before full strength. Don't move a grill onto a brand new patio the weekend it's poured. Tempting. Don't.
